If you run into any of the following issues, or another problem, call us:

  • The cooler won't turn on.

This could be due to a variety of reasons. Make sure you check for faulty fuses, tripped breakers, and loosened power cords.

  • The wine cooler isn't cooling.

Depending on the model, this could be due to thermostat problems, condenser or compressor issues, or evaporator fan motor damage.

  • The cooler is leaking water.

Compressor models may leak water if the door has been left open, door seals are defective or dirty, or a drain hose is plugged.

  • The wine cooler is making noise.

Some popping and cracking is normal due to temperature changes. If there are vibrating noises, make sure the cooler is level. If grinding or squealing, call for service.

  • The door does not close properly.

Ensure that the surface is level. If it is and the problem persists, check for dirty door gaskets or improperly positioned shelves.

FAQs

Mr. Appliance is one of the Neighbourly family of service brands and is committed to assisting homeowners with appliance repair and maintenance solutions. Our service technicians demonstrate superior integrity and dependability and our Neighborly Done Right Promise will ensure your satisfaction. Here are answers to some of your most frequently asked questions about wine coolers.

How can I tell if my wine cooler's thermostat is faulty?

Your wine cooler is a beverage fridge that should remain between 45- and 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Thermostats are built into wine coolers to monitor the temperature and send appropriate signals to activate other components. If the temperature inside your wine cooler is too warm or too cold, a faulty thermostat might be the cause.

Place a small thermometer inside your wine cooler and compare the reading to the temperature reading on the display to check the thermostat’s accuracy. Another likely sign of a faulty thermostat is if your cooler is “running” continuously. Here, the thermostat may no longer be sending the “shut off” signals to the necessary components when the proper temperature is reached.

Generally, thermostats are not devices that can be repaired; they must be replaced with a new one.

What should I do if my wine cooler keeps cycling on and off?

If your cooler frequently turns on or off, a malfunction is likely. In many cases, the appliance will shut down when it is overheating and later resume operating once it cools down. Sometimes, overheating is caused by insufficient ventilation, which may result from overfilling the cooler with bottles of wine. Removing some of the bottles from the cooler should allow for better airflow and prevent overheating.

Another reason why the cooler might be overheating is that excessive dirt and debris have accumulated on the condenser coils. Use a vacuum or soft brush to clean the coils.

Why is my wine cooler freezing my wine?

Even the best wine coolers are susceptible to freezing under certain circumstances. Four common scenarios that may cause freezing include:

  • The fridge's door is being opened too frequently, allowing too much moisture inside, which usually causes ice to form on the rear wall near the evaporator.
  • A lack of insulation allows either too much cool air to leak out or too much warm air to get in. This is likely caused by a damaged door seal, which is also referred to as a door gasket.
  • Excessive humidity may be building up inside the fridge. The proper humidity level (range) is roughly between 50 and 80%, and higher levels might be caused by a lack of refrigerant, which might result from a leak.
  • The fridge may be overfilled, which is preventing the airflow necessary for normal operation.

Is it normal for my wine cooler to vibrate?

If your wine cooler vibrates excessively, the noise can be disruptive, and the vibration may negatively impact the taste of the wine by disturbing the sediments. Make sure that the cooler is positioned at the level of the floor. Many wine coolers have adjustable feet attached to the base for positioning on uneven floors or to raise the height to meet an upper counter for in-cabinet wine cooler applications.

The vibration might result from having the cooler positioned too close to larger appliances such as dishwashers or clothes dryers. A faulty condenser fan or compressor might also be causing vibrations. Placing small pads below the cooler may also help limit vibrations.

How do I clean the condenser coils on my wine refrigerator?

Over time, the condenser coils on your wine cooler may accumulate dirt, dust, and debris, which can create excess heat and hinder the appliance's performance. The condenser coils are commonly composed of aluminum, copper, or other materials that allow for sufficient heat transfer.

Before cleaning the condenser coils, unplug the cooler and always check the manufacturer’s instructions for any warnings or precautions. The best methods of cleaning the coils are either a vacuum or a soft-bristled brush. When repositioning the fridge, be sure to allow at least two inches of open space between any adjacent walls or other objects.

Why does my wine cooler door keep fogging up?

It is common for coolers with glass front doors to become foggy. The fogging occurs because of condensation. In most instances, condensation forms in a wine cooler when the door is left ajar or is opened and closed frequently.

Another possible cause of fogging is a damaged door seal, also known as a gasket, which keeps the cooler airtight. Condensation may also form on the exterior of a glass cooler door, which results from the differences in interior and exterior air temperature. Exterior fogging is also not a reason for concern but may be minimized by either reducing the humidity level in the room or relocating the cooler to a different room with less humidity.

How often should I have my wine cooler serviced?

Today, residential appliance repair and maintenance providers are increasingly offering services for wine coolers. Many experienced service providers have access to compatible replacement parts and will also conduct annual inspections and preventative maintenance to help extend the serviceable lifespan of your wine cooler.
